What is Augmented Reality Training?

Augmented Reality (AR) training integrates digital information with the trainee’s environment in real-time. Cameras and microphones capture the current environment, and the training software projects digital information onto the learner’s device, which can be a headset, glasses, smartphone, or tablet. Training can also be delivered using properly equipped PCs.

For example, a maintenance worker must service a remote, failed commercial power generation turbine. The worker points his mobile device’s camera at the turbine, and the software projects detailed step-by-step maintenance procedures onto the screen overlaid on the turbine’s actual captured by the mobile device. The software may also track the worker’s progress and offer help as needed.

How do learners benefit from Augmented Reality Training?

Enhanced Engagement

AR training’s interactive and visually stimulating nature helps maintain learner interest.

Hands-on Practice

Individualizing the training helps employees retain information better by focusing extra attention on areas of difficulty and role-relevant skills.

Real-time Feedback

The AR system tracks progress and provides feedback immediately, reinforcing the learning experience.

Improved Retention

Learning by physically performing tasks improves skill and knowledge retention.

Increased Confidence

AR environments allow employees to experience the results of their actions safely while working on actual products or in real-world situations.

Why should we use Augmented Reality Training?

Augmented Reality Training is particularly valuable for:

AR is ideal for teaching complex maintenance, repair, and assembly procedures. Step-by-step instructions can be overlaid directly onto machinery, equipment, or an assembly workstation.

Salespeople can interactively demonstrate product capabilities to customers or familiarize themselves with product features and capabilities. Customer service staff can practice skills like objection handling using AR simulations.

Workers in dangerous environments like chemical plants or mining operations must understand complex safety and regulatory compliance procedures. AR simulations in an actual facility provide a low-risk opportunity to master life-saving skills.

Field service staff must be able to diagnose and correct equipment malfunctions. AR programs are ideal for practicing on equipment in field offices and as an aid working at a customer site.
